The National Museum of Taiwan Literature (NMTL), founded in 2003, is dedicated to preserving and showcasing Taiwan’s rich literary heritage. Housed in a historic building originally constructed in 1916 to serve as the Tainan Prefectural Government, the museum reflects European architectural styles and is one of several notable works by architect Moriyama Matsunosukee(森山松之助). The building, damaged during WWII and neglected for decades, underwent restoration in 1997 and reopened in 2003. Today, it serves as a vibrant hub for literature, culture, and history.

Hayashi Department Store
The Hayashi Department Store (林百貨), built in 1932 during the Japanese Colonial Period, reopened on June 30, 2013, after refurbishment. Known as the “five-story building” (五棧樓仔), it was once a bustling hub. After the Japanese Colonial Period, it was abandoned until its restoration as a department store in 2014. Inside, visitors can find limited edition Hayashi goods. Don’t miss the vintage dial-type elevator floor indicator, likely the last of its kind in Taiwan, and the Torii shrine on the top floor. A WWII bomb hole in the wall is a poignant reminder of its history.
